2018 Willow Creek Pinot Noir

The Great Oregon Wine Company
Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The color is dark and ruby red in the core, yet transparent and offering bright intensity in the glass. The outer rim is bright pink, suggesting youth and freshness. On the nose, the wine leads with a dark blackberry and boysenberry fruit. Dark cherry and raspberry find balance and fill in the fruit aromatics with bright accents. There is a spice component with hints of clove, coriander, cinnamon and smoke – all connected to the new oak influence. Additionally, there is a dark potting soil and decomposing forest floor note that adds to the earth profile. Mushrooms, cocoa, caramel, and a lifted floral tone fill in the gaps on the nose in a casual, but harmonious way. On the palate the fruit flavors are rich and concentrated with loads of dark cherry, blackberry, and boysenberry. The oak components of cinnamon, vanilla, and spice are folded nicely into the profile and the wine finishes clean and dry on the finish. The body is moderate with a pleasant balance between rounded tannins, bright acidity, and bold flavors. There is a distinctly dark mineral and earth component to this wine that is very much a hallmark characteristic for Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. That said, the mid palate is endowed with ripe fruit flavor and focused in a way where the wine ends up finishing with a dry, savory, lingering profile.
Vineyard Notes
Willow Creek is one of the younger vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley, planted in 2003. Mature willows line the banks of a small spring-fed creek that trickles through the vineyard; the shallow Jory soil and gentle south slope make this an ideal site for Pinot Noir. Fruit from this vineyard results in wines that are earthy yet surprisingly fruit-forward with balanced acidity and spice
Production Notes
Fermented in 1.5 ton tanks. Punched down twice daily. Barrel aged in 50% new French oak for 14 months
Winemaker Notes
2018 was a great vintage. The wines show a darker, juicier flavor profile when compared to the 2017 vintage. They exhibit brightness and balance with fresh depth of palate.
